Classroom teaching makes up the bulk of the faculty assignment at BMCC, with faculty teaching a regular assignment of 27 credits per year. Teaching takes many forms and all faculty work continually to find strategies that suit their students’ needs. At BMCC we encourage faculty to explore evidence-based High Impact Educational Practices (as defined by the AAC&U here. These include active and collaborative learning, writing intensive classes, experiential and service learning, learning communities, global competencies, and capstone experiences.
CETLS serves as a resource and a forum for activities and dialogue to maximize the collective potential of faculty and staff to achieve excellence in teaching, learning, and scholarship. CETLS is the hub for ongoing professional development for faculty.
CETLS organizes the BMCC Teaching Academy, a four-semester professional development program focusing on classroom teaching and the scholarship of teaching and learning.
BMCC’s online and hybrid course offerings are coordinated through the Digital Education Center and academic departments. In addition, the Digital Education Center provides training and development opportunities that allow faculty to develop their skills.
BMCC’s goals include having every student engage in one or more experiential learning opportunity before they graduate.
Writing Across the Curriculum (WAC) at BMCC is a resource for faculty members in all departments who are interested in promoting student learning through writing.
The Quantitative Literacy Across the Curriculum program works with faculty to develop quantitative reasoning skills among BMCC students.
With support from BMCC’s Office for Academic Affairs, the BMCC Library and CETLS coordinate the Open/Alternative Textbook Program to support faculty who are interested in replacing commercial textbooks with freely-available, no-cost open educational resources (OER) or with OER they create.
The Office of Research and Scholarly Inquiry can assist faculty with grant writing, to assess and develop a plan for securing grant support. This office further oversees the Internal Review Board approval process for those intending to conduct a study that involves human subjects (including students, faculty and/or staff).
The BMCC Office of Grants and Research Administration (OGRA) provides centralized administrative and management services for sponsored projects and offers a range of resources to inform and guide efforts to secure and manage external funding.
The Office of Institutional Effectiveness and Analytics (IEA) is responsible for and provides support in ensuring the implementation of the College’s Institutional Effectiveness plan, which provides BMCC with evidence of progress towards achievement of its mission and institutional goals.
The Professional Staff Congress-City University of New York (PSC-CUNY) Research Award Program was established as a major vehicle for the University’s encouragement and support of faculty research and to leverage external funding. It seeks to enhance the University’s role as a research institution, further the professional growth and development of its faculty, and provide support for both the established and the younger scholar.
Service to the department, college and/or university is expected for tenure and promotion. Faculty are encouraged to discuss various service opportunities with their department chairs.
