Writing Across the Curriculum (WAC) prepares faculty to teach Writing Intensive (WI) courses. The BMCC WAC program includes over 300 faculty members in all disciplines and departments who have been trained in WAC pedagogy and who teach Writing Intensive (WI) courses. The program is supported by a team of faculty coordinators and, starting Fall 2025, five Faculty Fellows.
Each semester, we train a cohort of faculty members in WAC pedagogy, enabling them to teach WI courses. We are also dedicated to supporting WAC faculty in all departments by offering pedagogical support, consultations on assignment design, and targeted refresher workshops.
New Faculty Fellowship
Starting Fall 2025, CUNY campuses will phase out the Graduate Center Writing Fellows. Here at BMCC, we are excited to offer trained WI faculty the opportunity to become WAC Faculty Fellows. Fellows will receive funding over one academic year and may reapply for a second academic year. They will work in active and structured ways with the WAC Program and the broader WAC community at BMCC. The goal of the program is to develop a community of educators who are committed to improving, enhancing and innovating practices that support student writing and learning in the disciplines.
See WAC Faculty Fellowship (pdf) for more information on the opportunity and how to apply. Applications for 2025/2026 Faculty Fellows are due April 30, 2025.
For faculty currently in WAC training workshops
One of the most important parts of the training is the portfolio that you complete with the help of your Writing Fellow. You can download the checklists to keep yourself on track:

For faculty already certified and teaching your first WI course
In your first semester of teaching a WI course, you’ll work closely with a Writing Fellow to pilot new assignments and techniques and to prepare your certification portfolio.
Creating WI Assignments
Creating a new assignment can be daunting, especially if you’re new to WI courses. Looking at assignments developed by other faculty at BMCC can be a great way to get some inspiration. The WAC program maintains an archive of sample writing assignments, organized by department. Selected materials can be found in the online assignment archive. You can also Contact us to schedule a time to come by the WAC office in S424 to look through our paper materials for assignments that suit your needs.
