Non-Degree/Permit Students

A non-degree student is one who is taking courses at BMCC, but not working towards a degree. There are many reasons you might want to be a non-degree student:

  • If you’ve been away from school for a while and want to try a course
  • To gain additional skills in one area, for instance, computer science or foreign languages.

Non-Degree and Permit students are not required to meet with an advisor prior to registration, but you can contact us with any questions you may have.

Non-Degree Students

As a non-degree student, you are able to register for most courses without needing permission from the college. If you are looking to enroll in an English (ENG) course, you will either need to obtain permission from the English Department chairperson or deputy chairperson(s), or satisfy the established prerequisites for the course you wish to take. Similarly, if you are looking to enroll in a mathematics (MAT) course you will either need to obtain permission from the Mathematics Department chairperson or deputy chairpersons(s), or satisfy the established prerequisites for the course you wish to take.

If you have any questions regarding specific courses, we encourage you to reach out to the academic departments directly. Their contact information can be found on the online BMCC Directory.

Permit Students

Visiting students from other CUNY colleges with approved ePermits will be able to enroll in courses based on seat availability. Permit students should check their CUNYfirst Student Center for their enrollment date at BMCC. Questions should be directed to your home institution.
