Before you request a Federal Direct Loan, learn about the Direct Loan program by reading the Federal Direct Loan Frequently Asked Questions pages.
Steps to Request a Federal Direct Loan
- File a Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) for 2024-2025.
- If you are a first-time Direct Loan borrower at BMCC, you must complete Entrance Counseling.
- Decide the amount you wish to borrow using the Federal Direct Loan Borrowing Chart. Learn what happens after you submit your loan request.
If you are a first-time Direct Loan borrower at BMCC, sign an Electronic Master Promissory Note (e-MPN) using the FSA ID you used to sign your FAFSA. - Complete a Direct Loan Request by clicking on the “Direct Loan Processing Form” link on your CUNYfirst Student Center page.
Federal Direct Parent (PLUS) Loan
If you are a dependent student and your parents wish to request a Federal Direct PLUS Loan, your parents must fill out, sign and submit an online Federal Direct PLUS Loan Request.
- Look for the “Create New Account” link and follow the instructions to create a user name and password to access the PLUS Loan Request.
Parents who are first time PLUS Loan borrowers must also sign an Electronic Master Promissory Note (e-MPN) online using a Department of Education FSA ID. If your parents do not have or have forgotten their FSA ID, they may apply for a new one at the FSA ID website.
