1. What is UMLA?

UMLA stands for Urban Male Leadership Academy. UMLA’s primary goal of increase the enrollment, retention, and graduation rates from groups that are severely underrepresented in higher education, particularly men of color. The #UMLAFAMILY aims to prepare BMCC students with tools and resources to take inside and outside of the classroom.

2. Is UMLA only for men?

No, all programs and activities of the BMCC Urban Male Leadership Academy are open to all BMCC students, faculty, and staff, without regard to race, gender, national origin, or other characteristics.

3. If I participate in another program at BMCC, can I still join UMLA?

Of course! We encourage you to take advantage of the vast programs and opportunities that BMCC offers. UMLA is designed to supplement, not compete with other programs, resources, and academic supports. If you are a current BMCC student, you are welcome to join us and be part of the UMLA family.

4. What kind of tools do you offer?

UMLA provides many tools and opportunities such as:

  • Structured mentorship
  • Individualized academic support services
  • Leadership training
  • Developing pipelines to higher education and professional opportunities
