Eugene Emono

Eugene Emono

Year of graduation: 2019
Major: Mathematics

Update: After BMCC I went to Brooklyn College for a bachelor’s degree in Theoretical Math and then to Columbia Engineering for an M.Sc. in Applied Math. While keeping my sights on quantitative research, I’m currently mostly involved in data annotation (in measure theoretic probability and stochastic processes) for AI training, consulting on a freelance basis for several companies.

Today’s AI models, as remarkably as they might perform on certain tests or benchmarks, are still rather weak on certain reasoning abilities; they could produce an incorrect response or follow an incorrect reasoning path to some conclusion—which itself could be incorrect. With my expertise, I help supply data on which such models can be trained to ‘think’ and ‘reason’ more accurately at least within the math/logic domain.

Advice for someone interested in this field: If passionate about Advanced Probability Theory: Prioritise independent study and learn at your own pace. Get comfortable with (reading/writing) proofs. Be patient with yourself.

Advice for someone interested in this field: With a B.A in mathematics you can do what ever you want. I worked as an IT specialist, I worked as software developer and now as a data scientist. Learn mathematics, this an open door and people always make good money with mathematics degrees.

K-Medlin

Karen (K) Medlin

Year of graduation: 2017
Major: Mathematics

Update: I am an Applied Math Ph.D. candidate at the University of North Carolina with experience developing and applying new methods for Machine Learning/Artificial Intelligence models. I did my post-baccalaureate course-work at BMCC, after my initial bachelor’s degree and career in non-profit fund-raising.
Linkedin: https://www.linkedin.com/in/kkmedlin/

Advice for someone interested in this field: A bachelor’s degree in mathematics gives you many options given its rigorous training in analytical thinking. Can’t go wrong with that! If you’re considering graduate school, get into research as soon as you can. Find a sub-field that makes your brain excited and find mentors who want to cultivate that excitement. If you have doubts about your mentor believing in you, trust your doubts, and find a new mentor as soon as possible.

High-level mathematics is a highly competitive field so assume you’ll find yourself in a space where others will want to keep you down. Believe in yourself, power through and keep your inner circle filled only with people who believe in you.  Alternatively, find a graduate program related to mathematics where there is more demand in the marketplace such as computer science, statistics or medical physics.

Nicole Belhumeur

Noelle Belhumeur

Year of graduation: 2013
Major: Mathematics

Update: After BMCC, I pursued a bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering. I currently work for the US Army Corps of Engineers in New Orleans, LA as a mechanical engineer. My primary role is overseeing the maintenance requirements of two towboats and four crane barges that operate in southern Louisiana.
Linkedin: https://www.linkedin.com/in/noelle-belhumeur-51a846163/

Advice for someone interested in this field: Whether you are interested in marine or any other field of engineering:
1. Be persistent in securing an internship prior to graduation.
2. Don’t get discouraged! I applied to at least 50 internships before finally landing one.
3. Don’t be afraid to ask questions. If you don’t understand a subject/topic/etc, your classmates or peers probably don’t either (it’s not only you).
4. Never stop asking questions. Always strive to broaden your knowledge base.
5. Network. Attend job fairs and industry conventions. Make connections and keep in touch. Connections can lead to jobs, or help solve work related issues down the road.

Dana Lockheart

Dana Lanee Lockhart

Year of graduation: 2011
Major: Mathematics

Update: I am a qualitative methodologist and doctoral candidate at William & Mary in the Education Planning, Policy, and Leadership/Gifted Education Administration program. I am interested in interdisciplinary projects that creatively approach our societal need for radical change.
Linkedin: https://www.linkedin.com/in/dana-lanee-lockhart/

Advice for someone interested in this field: I have consistently said that BMCC was the best college I have ever attended, but unfortunately, I hadn’t officially graduated as I was in such a rush to get to Brooklyn College.  About a year later, I took a break from college, and upon returning wanted to complete my BMCC degree, but someone told me that the chances of me graduating from BMCC at that point were slim. However, no one at BMCC thought that way and thankfully, neither did my mom. Upon telling her, she quickly replied, “Bullshit, there’s always a way.”  Well, I found a way but of course, it has been unpredictably unpredictable.

Leonce Colas

Leonce Colas

Year of graduation: 2011
Major: Mathematics

Update: I am an actuarial analyst at Segal. I’m part of a team of professionals who assist clients in managing their health benefits by providing services such as budget projections, reserve calculations and requests for proposals to help improve their coverage. After BMCC, I earned a Bachelor of Science in Mathematics at Brooklyn College, with a focus on Actuarial Science.
Linkedin: https://www.linkedin.com/in/leonce-colas/

Advice for someone interested in this field: A degree in Mathematics offers a powerful foundation and can pave the way to unlocking a wide range of opportunities, especially in the field of actuarial science. If you want to commit to becoming an actuary, it’s a best to start taking exams as soon as possible, especially while you’re in school. Organizations like the International Association of Black Actuaries (IABA) and the Organization of Latino Actuaries (OLA) offer exam preparation boot camps as well as reimbursement for exam fees. Do not get discouraged if you fail an exam–simply get back on track and revise your study strategy.
