The BMCC Department of Mathematics offers an Associate of Science (A.S.) degree in Mathematics as well as one in Data Science. In addition to math course requirements for liberal arts majors and elementary calculus and linear algebra, we offer math courses such as: ordinary differential equations, advanced calculus, abstract algebra, history of mathematics, statistics and computer programming.
Mathematics
The Associate in Science (A.S.) degree in Mathematics program is designed to provide students with the first two years of study required to major in mathematics at the senior college level and is also suitable for students who wish to minor in mathematics at the senior college level. In addition, the program provides the foundation for specialization along any of the following career paths: graduate studies in mathematics leading to a master’s or doctoral degree; professions in the field of mathematics education; professions requiring substantial mathematics preparation (e.g., statistician, actuary, engineering, medical or physical sciences, economics, etc.)
Data Science
The Associate in Science (A.S.) degree in Data Science teaches students to develop critical thinking skills using appropriate technological and mathematical methods to extract information from data about topics and issues including global warming, online sales, elections, investment analysis, and COVID vaccine development. The program prepares students to transfer into Data Science programs at senior colleges with no loss of credit and for a competitive job market in a lucrative and interesting field. Upon successful completion of the program, students are able to transfer seamlessly into Data Science programs at John Jay College of Criminal Justice and New York City College of Technology.
Math Lab Resources and Support
The Math Lab provides resources and support for both math majors and students in other fields who are taking math courses. Online and in-person tutoring as well as downloadable materials and sample tests are available.
Students who have satisfied certain requirements can apply for part time work as Math Lab Tutors.
Extracurricular Math Activities
Math/Stem activities such as the Math Team, Math Club and Math Lounge offer opportunities for students to grow and enhance their skills, as well as socialize with others.
Research and Internship Opportunities
At BMCC, there are opportunities for students to work on a mathematical research project with a faculty mentor. The Office of Internships and Experiential Learning has a number of internships opportunities for math majors or students with strong mathematics skills.
Careers
The math major provides the foundation for many career paths such as becoming a teacher or professor, a mathematician, a statistician, an actuary, a financial analyst, a research analyst, a software designer and developer, a consultant, an engineer, a financial engineer, a cryptographer, a scientist, and many others.
