Basic Skills English Lab

The Basic Skills English Lab currently provides online tutoring through Uupswing Use your BMCC student email username and password to log in. Here are instructions to help you use the new online system.

The Basic Skills English Lab helps students strengthen their reading ability and prepares them for the CUNY Assessment Test in reading. The Basic Skills English Lab primarily serves students in English 88 and English 95. Only students who had taken ENG 95 twice are allowed to take the 20 hour CUNY Assessment Test Workshop (CATW) Tutoring program instead of taking ENG 95 a third time.

In the Basic Skills English Lab:

  • We work in small groups led by a tutor to make you a competent writer.
  • We have a number of writing activities to improve your fluency in reading and writing.
  • We have special techniques to help you find and fix your own errors.

If you are allowed to take the 20 hour CATW Tutoring program instead of repeating ENG 95, it is best to register at the Lab beginning of the semester to insure that you meet the full 20 hour requirement.
Students who have taken ENG 95 once and did not pass the CATW must retake ENG 95 and cannot substitute the CATW tutoring for the ENG 95 class.

Please Note: If you are a student in an English 102, 201, or 300 course you can have access to tutoring via the Learning Resource Center.
