New Student Programs and Student Affairs have collaborated to create a program designed specifically to serve our first-generation college student population at Borough of Manhattan Community College. First-generation college students are the first in their family to attend college. This program is designed to provide students with personal support and encouragement through their BMCC experience.
The BMCC Panther Partners program was recognized by CUNY on National First-Generation College Celebration Day, November 8, 2019, as well as included in the inaugural cohort of the First Forward Institutions, an initiative of the Center for First-Generation Student Success.
Participants of the program are selected through an application process. Once selected, BMCC students are paired with BMCC staff whom are also first-generation college students. Panther Partners have a number of workshops organized for them throughout the program that cover a myriad of topics including:
- Academic Achievement through Academic Advisement
- Knowing your Finances
- Goal Setting & Asking for Help
Throughout the program Student Partners and Staff Partners meet a minimum of three times to get together and discuss anything that comes up. Student Partners are also supported by the New Student Programs team who will meet with them a minimum of two times throughout the semester. Panther Partners finish the semester off with a celebratory social off-campus.
