Sunil B. Gupta is the new Dean of Continuing Education and Workforce Development at BMCC. Gupta has been working in Continuing Education for nearly ten years in universities and international organizations. He says, “I am excited about the opportunity to work closely with BMCC’s distinguished faculty.”
Before coming to BMCC, Gupta was the Executive Director of Continuing Education, Distance Learning and Workforce Development at Polytechnic University. There he developed and oversaw university-based degree academic study and continuing education training programs involving students, faculty, and industry.
In his various capacities, he helped found a university-based Distance Learning Center for Graduate Degree programs and introduced distance-learning methodologies to support American Studies in Asia. In 2000, Dean Gupta ran the Professional Training and Continuing Education Program at the American Institute of Chemical Engineers and launched their first distance learning programs focusing on training engineers and plant operators in the petro-chemical industry.
Dean Gupta is an active member of ASME (American Society of Mechanical Engineers), leading its Engineering Management Certification International Committee and served as a guest speaker at ASME’s Engineering Management International Forum, which took place at Beijing’s Tsinghua University.
Over the last several years, Gupta represented Polytechnic University in a number of initiatives linking educational resources to regional economic needs— from defense conversion to the high technology training requirements—of multimedia and finance industries. Dean Gupta lectures and writes about distance learning, its benefits in international higher education and has had his articles published in China and the United States.
His interests in higher education include leadership studies, organizational culture, and a wide range of policy questions focusing on issues of access to education and adult learning. His career has been spent in a variety of senior leadership positions in higher education’s public and private sectors. Dean Gupta received his B.A. from Saint John’s University and an M.S. from Polytechnic University. He is a native New Yorker, born and raised in New York.
