In 2021, New York City elected its first majority female city council. This is a huge feat in a city that has never had a female mayor and where women were once kept out of the political process entirely. This year marks the first time that the top leadership positions of the New York City Council are all held by women, specifically women of color. How did they get there? What does it matter?
