Elizabeth A. Phelps received her PhD from Princeton University and served on the faculty of Yale University and New York University. She is currently the Pershing Square Professor of Human Neuroscience at Harvard University.
Her laboratory has earned widespread acclaim for its groundbreaking research on how the human brain processes emotion, particularly as it relates to learning and memory. The title of her talk at BMCC is “Emotion and Memory: From Perception to Recall.” Memories for emotional events are often described as so vivid they are hard to forget. But what happens in the brain that gives memories for emotional events their unique qualities? In this talk, Prof. Phelps will walk through stages of memory – from initial perception of the event to memory storage to retrieval – and discuss how emotion impacts each stage of memory.
