The Teacher Education Department in collaboration with the Speech, Communications, and Theater Arts Dept present, presents “Teaching to Transgress: Arts in Education as the Practice of Freedom.” Professor Yolanda “Jolie” Medina, Chair of the Teacher Education Department, will moderate a chat with Professor Karl O’Brian Williams, Theater Arts Department, with special guest Dr. Rachel McCaulsky from Ailey Arts In Education and Community Programs.
This discussion will explore how integrating the arts into classrooms can empower individuals, foster critical thinking, and challenge societal norms. How art—whether through visual arts, music, theater, or literature—can provide students with the tools to express themselves, confront injustices, and reclaim their narratives. The conversation will highlight the role of art in fostering creativity, promoting inclusivity, and creating spaces where diverse voices can be heard, thus acting as a transformative force for both personal and collective liberation.
