English as a Second Language (ESL)

The English as a Second Language (ESL) courses offered by the Department of Academic Literacy and Linguistics provide English language instruction with a focus on reading and writing to BMCC students whose primary language is not English.

Students are placed in the appropriate level of ESL based on a CUNY-wide placement exam. There are three levels of ESL, ranging from low-intermediate to advanced: ESL54/49, ESL94RW, and ESL96. In addition, at the highest level, there are co-requisite courses available that combine credit-bearing courses in CRT and LIN with ESL 96 (e.g., CRT 100.6, LIN 100.6).

The ESL Lab

The ESL Lab is a computer lab dedicated to serving the needs of students enrolled in ESL courses. Located on the 5th floor (S-510J), the Lab provides ESL students with convenient access to computers and other valuable resources, including educational software and tutoring.
