English as a Second Language (ESL)

The English as a Second Language component of the Department of Academic Literacy and Linguistics provides developmental writing instruction to BMCC students who have taken but not yet passed the CUNY Assessment Test in Writing (CATW) or the ESLD and whose first language is not English.

There are three levels of ESL, ranging from low-intermediate to advanced: ESL54/49, ESL94, and ESL95.In addition there are co-requisite courses available, combining ESL95 and ACR95 (ESL96) and credit-bearing courses in CRT and LIN combined with ESL95 (e.g., CRT100.6, LIN100.6, etc.)

The ESL Lab

The ESL Lab is a computer lab dedicated to serving the needs of students enrolled in ESL courses. Located on the 5th floor (S510J), the Lab provides ESL students with convenient access to computers and other valuable resources, including educational software and tutoring.
