Candidate for Senator
Voices of Students
Hello everyone,
Thank you for taking the time to read my statement. My name is Maria Ponce, and I am a Business Administration Major running for SGA Senator. My first semester at BMCC felt isolating and it was very difficult to make connections. It demotivated me to come to classes sometimes which only led me down a deeper hole of isolation.
Through clubs and activities, I was slowly able to make connections and have something to look forward to at BMCC. As senator, I want to make sure no other students have a rough experience at BMCC the way I did. I believe that the student government should actively work to make BMCC a place where every student feels supported, included, and connected.
One of the biggest issues I see on campus is the lack of community. Many students have long commutes, including myself, and only come to campus for classes or club meetings, which sometimes gives us the last minute surprise of being cancelled. I believe and I know we can do more to make BMCC feel like a third home for students.
If I get elected, I want to make sure students always have a place to go on campus. Somewhere they know will be open all day where they can meet people, hang out, or join activities. I also want to push for better communication between students and the administration so that last minute cancellations happen less often and everyone knows what resources are available to them. I also want to make sure student clubs get the funding they need. I have years of experience in restorative justice in which I’ve learned how to lead discussions, resolve conflicts, and make sure everyone’s voice is heard, which I think is really important for student government. As senator, my goal is to build a campus culture that supports all students. I’ll be here to listen, speak up for
you, and work on the issues that matter most. Vote for me, Maria Ponce for SGA senator because every student deserves to feel at home at BMCC.
Sincerely, Maria Ponce
