Catherine Garcia

Candidate for Senator
Voices of Students

Catherine GarciaHi everyone,

I would be honored to be elected as your senator for SGA (Student Government Association.). I have been at BMCC for about 4 semesters and have felt on the outs on events and opportunities. I want this change, I wish BMCC to become a place where you feel heard and important. As well as, comfortable asking for help and direction. BMCC has much to offer and you just have to ask and take advantage of the opportunities here to grow. If I do become your senator I will make it my duty to be available and approachable at any time you need. I will personally find the information and resources that are available to you, and introduce you to people who have had similar situations who could possibly lend a hand.

I am Catherine Garcia and my major is in Biotechnology. I am the oldest of 3 children and first generation Mexican-American latina. My first semester at BMCC was a difficult transition as I know it was for many of you. I didn’t have friends on campus and after classes I went straight home. I did not communicate or participate in school activities, so I did not know of the educational or cultural events taking place. I know we all get emails but not most of us read them unless it has to do with assignments, FAFSA, or advisors. As senator I would ensure that students know of events at school by communicating to them in class announcements or in person. I am treasure for latinos in STEM and have promoted the club by communicating with everyone on my path and if they are interested in something different, I suggest other clubs that may suit them better.

My goal is to make campus a more vibrant space, transparent, and inclusive. We can work together and create a more open and inclusive community full of diversity. I want to help the future SGA create a safe and engaging place for students, to give you an opportunity to meet people and develop as a person. I appreciate you as a student getting a higher education as well as tour time.

Sincerely, Catherine Garcia
