Dear BMCC Community,
On February 25, 2025, Borough of Manhattan Community College (BMCC) had the distinct honor of hosting the Hispanic Association of Colleges and Universities (HACU) “On the Road” event. It was a privilege to welcome HACU President Antonio R. Flores, along with esteemed HACU staff, and leaders from across the higher education landscape to our vibrant College.
The “HACU on the Road” initiative is invaluable in its mission to foster meaningful discussions surrounding the current state of higher education. The session led by President Flores, themed “Destination: Higher Education Success” was particularly insightful, providing a comprehensive overview of HACU’s programs, its expanding international initiatives, and the multifaceted challenges and opportunities facing Hispanic-Serving Institutions (HSIs) across the nation. During the event, attendees engaged in productive conversations regarding strategies for supporting student success, the importance of advocacy in securing resources, and the development of innovative initiatives that address the unique needs of our diverse student body.
For BMCC, this event held particular significance. Our connection with HACU spans an impressive 33 years, a testament to our shared commitment to empowering Hispanic students through education. As a designated HSI, we recognize that this distinction carries a deep responsibility. It compels us to actively cultivate a supportive and inclusive environment where our Hispanic students and the broader community cannot only enroll but truly thrive, graduating equipped with the knowledge and skills to succeed in their chosen fields.
Our partnership with HACU is fundamental to upholding this responsibility. HACU provides us with access to a wealth of resources, proven best practices, and a national network of like-minded institutions dedicated to serving Hispanic students. This collaboration is essential for staying at the forefront of innovation and ensuring that BMCC is providing the highest quality educational experience possible.
BMCC is recognized as a leader in serving Hispanic students. Our recent designation as a Fulbright HSI Leader by the U.S. Department of State and our consistent ranking among the top Hispanic Serving Institutions in the nation reflect our unwavering commitment to student success and the transformative power of education. These achievements are a direct result of the dedication of our faculty, staff, and administrators, coupled with the invaluable support and guidance we receive through our partnership with HACU.
The “HACU On the Road” event at BMCC reaffirmed our commitment to continuing this vital work. We are determined to build upon our successes and explore new avenues for supporting our students, strengthening our community, and advancing the cause of higher education for all.
I extend heartfelt gratitude to everyone who participated in making this event a resounding success. We look forward to a continued and fruitful partnership with HACU as we work together to create a brighter future for our students and our communities.
Sincerely,
Dr. Anthony E. Munroe
President Borough of Manhattan Community College
