Center for Career Development Fall 2023 Job Fair a Resounding Success

October 19, 2023

More than 580 students—a 40% increase over the Fall 2022 job fair—filled the Borough of Manhattan Community College (BMCC/CUNY) gymnasium for the Center for Career Development’s Fall 2023 Career Fair on October 18.

The gym roared with conversation as students met with employer representatives who were on hand to accept resumes and conduct initial interviews. Employers at the fair represented job sectors ranging from healthcare to finance, government positions too retail.

“Our students were actively seeking and engaging with the employers that attended,” said Driada Rivas, Interim Director of the Center for Career Development. “We received great reviews from the majority of the employers who were impressed by our student. They enjoyed their experience.”

She said some employers including Toy Records, Fastenal, Health First and City Year were interested in coming back to BMCC for on-campus tabling opportunities.

Business major Maria Hernandez was at the fair looking for internship opportunities in the business and marketing sectors.

“I like the creativity you have to put into marketing and getting consumers to buy your product or services,” said Hernandez, who grew up in Colombia and says she appreciates BMCC’s diversity. “I’ve found there’s a large community of people from different countries and it feels very welcoming here.”

As she mapped out the location of various employers to visit, she explained that this was her first job fair and she was initially nervous about attending. But Hernandez felt more confident after utilizing some of the Center for Career Developments job fair preparation services.

“I got help with my resume and attended several workshops about different types of internships beforehand,” said Hernandez.

Engineering Science major Benazir Faroozy, who is from India and has been in New York City for just two months, said she was enjoying the job fair as well as her college experience at BMCC.  She said she had joined a few student clubs, including the business club.

“My future goal is to start a business that incorporates my engineering science skills, “said Faroozy. “After completing a degree at a four-year college and then getting my master’s degree.”

But for now, she’s focused on her studies.

“In ten years, I see myself as a CEO of a great company,” said Faroozy.
