BMCC Brings Health Education, Services to Harlem, June 16

Health Fair

June 14, 2022

Borough of Manhattan Community College/CUNY, GE Healthcare, and the NYC Mobile Vaccination Van are collaborating to bring the neighborhood of Harlem a day of health education and services.

On June 16, from 9 a.m.– 3 p.m., at the CUNY Center in Harlem, located at 55 W. 125th Street, the health fair will offer FREE services including COVID-19 vaccinations and boosters, mammogram healthcare information, and health type screenings.

“Having access to affordable health care is a critical part in the advancement of equity and inclusion in our community,” said BMCC President Dr. Anthony E. Munroe. “Limiting access to healthcare and health education can make a difference in someone’s longevity and quality of life. BMCC is here to serve the community in bringing these services to Harlem and its surrounding neighborhoods.”

The health fair is being presented on the eve of New York City’s celebration of Juneteenth, commemorating emancipation of enslaved black Americans and observing the African-American culture.

Compared to other populations, African Americans are generally at higher risk for heart diseases, stroke, cancer, asthma, influenza and pneumonia, diabetes, and HIV/AIDS, according to the Office of Minority Health, part of the U.S. Department for Health and Human Services.

The health fair will provide many opportunities to acquire free information and services including GE Healthcare’s Breast Imaging Mobile Van offering the latest innovations in breast imaging and GE Healthcare’s industry leading technology.

“We want to spread the word about the importance of early breast cancer detection,” said Deborah Levine, LCSW, ACSW, CUNYSPH Community Outreach Director. “We will also be giving out educational material on what to expect when getting a mammogram.”

Other services and opportunities include:

  • The NYC Mobile Vaccination Van offering free COVID-19 vaccinations, boosters and testing. No appointments are necessary.
  • Students from BMCC’s Nursing Program and CUNY’s School of Public Health will be providing health type screenings.
  • Manhattan Educational Opportunity Center and BMCC Admissions will be providing recruitment resources to the community who are interested in learning about courses and degree programs available.

Following the health fair, BMCC and MEOC will continue to offer opportunities for the community to visit the CUNY Center in Harlem to learn about available courses, majors and programs offered. Community members must make an appointment online before visiting the center.
