John Paul González Gutiérrez, Ph.D.
Dr. González completed a Ph.D. in History (specializing in Puerto Rico and the Caribbean) at the Centro de Estudios Avanzados de Puerto Rico y el Caribe.
He earned a B.A. in Music with a concentration in Music Education from the Conservatory of Music of Puerto Rico; and an M.A. in Teacher Education from Brooklyn College Conservatory of Music/CUNY. He completed doctoral-level coursework in Intercultural Education at NYU, and courses in Ear Training and Musicianship at the Juilliard School of Music.
He regularly teaches Puerto Rican Culture and Folklore, Latinos in the U.S., as well the History of Puerto Rico, Puerto Rican Experience in the U.S., Caribbean History, and Puerto Rican Music. He has taught graduate courses in Teacher Education and Multi-Cultural Education. His experience includes teaching in Puerto Rico and the Dominican Republic.
In addition to BMCC, he has taught at John Jay College of Criminal Justice, Brooklyn College, Hunter College, and Lehman College.
Areas of specialty are Puerto Rican music, culture, and 19th and 20th-century history. His research interest is the cultural movement of Puerto Rico in the 1950s and ’60s.
