The Media Arts and Technology Dept. along with the Social Sciences Dept. invites all BMCC students, faculty and staff to a screening of Imitation of Life.
A Best Picture nominee, box office hit, and arguably the first major studio film to feature Black actors in leading roles (Louise Beavers and Fredi Washington, both civil rights activists), Imitation of Life is based on the1933 Fannie Hurst novel inspired by her trip to Canada with Harlem Renaissance icon Zora Neale Hurston. Both praised and reviled – sometimes praised, then reviled – by the Black intelligentsia at the time, it was named to the National Film Registry in 2005. A gripping melodrama of the experience of racial identity, (single) motherhood, and the American dream and its discontents.
