Dear BMCC Community,
I write to celebrate a landmark achievement for our institution and to convey BMCC’s commitment to empowering the next generation of female leaders in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics). On February 11, 2025, on International Day of Girls and Women in Science, we proudly launched our Women in STEM website; a digital platform designed to support, inspire, and amplify the voices of women pursuing careers in these vital fields. The launch of the website represents an important step toward addressing and dismantling the gender disparities that are pervasive in STEM fields. For far too long, women have been underrepresented in these areas, which are crucial for driving innovation, solving complex problems, and advancing our society. By establishing this platform, BMCC is sending a clear message: women belong in STEM, and we are committed to fostering an environment where their contributions are recognized, celebrated, and nurtured.
The Women in STEM initiative, detailed on our website, encompasses a variety of programs and resources aimed at supporting female students and faculty. From mentorship opportunities to networking events, scholarship information, and research initiatives, our goal is to create an inclusive learning environment. The website serves as a hub for information, connecting students with the tools and resources they need to succeed in their educational journeys and future careers. You can explore this exciting initiative by visiting: www.bmcc.cuny.edu/women-in-stem. Here, you will also find inspiring stories from alumni who have carved paths in various STEM fields. These narratives highlight their challenges, triumphs, and the unwavering determination that has propelled them forward.
As we celebrate the launch of this website, let us also reflect on the significance of this moment. It is a reminder that we must continue to challenge the status quo and advocate for equality. By investing in our women in STEM, we are investing in the future of innovation and progress. The world is in dire need of diverse perspectives and creative solutions to tackle the pressing challenges we face — from climate change and public health crises to technological advancements and social equity. I urge each of you to take on the challenge of being an advocate for women in STEM. Support your classmates, engage with faculty, and participate in the events offered through the Women in STEM initiative.
Whether you’re a student, a faculty member, or a staff member, your participation is invaluable. By collaborating and sharing ideas, we can foster a culture of empowerment and support that will resonate beyond our campus. Moreover, let us acknowledge that this initiative is a shared responsibility. It is not solely the duty of women to champion their place in STEM; it is a collective endeavor that requires the involvement from everyone to create an environment where gender does not dictate opportunity, and where every individual, regardless of their background, can thrive in pursuit of their passions. I encourage you all to embrace this initiative wholeheartedly. Let the Women in STEM site serve as a source of inspiration that represents the incredible potential within each of us. Let us stand together in solidarity, for when we lift each other up, we rise as a community, prepared to make an indelible mark on the world.
In closing, I would like to extend my heartfelt gratitude to everyone who contributed to this initiative. Your dedication to supporting women in STEM reflects the values that make BMCC such a special place.
Sincerely,
Anthony E. Munroe
