Hosted by Borough of Manhattan Community College, CUNY
in collaboration with New York College English Association

Welcome to the homepage for our sixth Transitions and Transactions conference: Teaching Literature in the Time of COVID.  Nearly twelve years after we began planning our first conference, we are pleased to invite you to continue this discussion uniquely dedicated to the teaching of literature in community colleges.  We look forward to the innovative contributions of our many returning presenters, as well as those who are attending our conference for the first time.

This years theme, Teaching Literature in the Time of COVID, has affected us all in ways we are still discovering. We have been impressed by the creativity of faculty at community colleges during this challenging time using literature and the virtual classroom.  In todays volatile climate, it is more important than ever to come together to discuss and debate the future of teaching and the ways the new technologically based pedagogy has impacted us all. How has this experience changed teaching? Will some of these changes be permanent? How does that impact how we think about what we do?  What is the return to the physical classroom like now? What will the future hold?

For our students, many of whom are the first in their families to attend college, literary encounters are often life-changing experiences. Through our engagement with literature, we and our students not only express our individual visions but build community and enact political and social change.  How have we attended to this during the time of COVID?

We look forward to a dynamic interchange of ideas and an opportunity to share our strategies for meeting the challenges of teaching literature in todays community colleges during and after COVID.
