The scaffolding being erected across the BMCC campus is a precursor to infrastructure repairs to the main building at 199 Chambers Street. The work will take place over the next six months, according to the college’s Director of Operations, Planning and Construction, Ed Sullivan.

The project is a result of Local Law 11, which requires each building in New York City to be inspected every 10 years to determine if it requires repairs. BMCC contracted with Superstructures, a city-based firm of architects and structural engineers, to carry out the inspection and any ensuing work, said Sullivan.

The aim of the repairs is to ensure that the bricks of the building are protected from water seepage and damage. If water seeps into small crevasses in or between bricks, it can freeze, causing them to crack. Superstructures will work on mortar joints and replace caps guarding brick walls from water damage.

The main entrance and the parking lot will be the first sections of the campus to receive attention, lasting two months. The contractors will then concentrate on the rest of the building for four months. Sullivan said the scaffolding is there to provide protection during the project.

The last of the scaffolding will be built by Thanksgiving weekend. The BMCC parking lot located on the corner of North Moore Street and West Street will close after classes on Wednesday, Nov. 26, and re-open on Sunday morning, Nov. 30, to allow for the last of the scaffolding to be put in place.

“At no time during the project will there be any danger to faculty, students or staff,” said Sullivan. “The scaffolding is being put up to protect everyone while the work is going on.”
