Message from the President to Faculty, Staff and Students (02/04/20)

BMCC Community,

Borough of Manhattan Community College (BMCC) and the City University of New York (CUNY) are monitoring an outbreak caused by a Novel Coronavirus (2019-nCoV) first identified in Wuhan, Hubei Province, China. Much is not known about the virus, including its mode of transmission. At this time, the primary risk factor is related to the outbreak in China and there are ongoing investigations to learn more about this virus.

The 2019 coronavirus, a so-called “novel virus,” is a respiratory tract illness that presents flu-like symptoms and was first identified in December 2019 in Wuhan City, Hubei Province, China. It has spread to several countries, including some confirmed cases in the United States.

BMCC and CUNY continue to follow the guidance provided by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC)New York State Department of Health and New York City Department of Health and Mental Hygiene to proactively manage the risk.

We encourage all students, faculty and staff to take normal precautions against sickness, such as regular hand washing and staying home when you are sick. Individuals who are experiencing symptoms and may have traveled to areas of concern, or have been in contact with somebody who has traveled to these areas, should call ahead to their healthcare provider for treatment.

Students, faculty and staff who have concerns about the virus or have questions, can contact Penny Jordan, nurse in Health Services, Room N-380 at 199 Chambers Street, or call (212) 220-8256. Visit BMCC Health Services to learn more about Resources on Coronavirus or read through Frequently Asked Questions.

BMCC remains as a welcoming institution, respectful and supportive of its community members. We will continue to update the college as developments occur.
