Recent Incident at BMCC Update

Dear BMCC Community,

I want to share additional information about the very disturbing incident that occurred at BMCC last week. A black baby doll, used as a teaching tool, was discovered in one of our classrooms, hanging from a rope around its neck.  As soon as this egregious incident was brought to our attention, BMCC immediately started investigating and reported it to the New York City Police Department.

The alleged offenders have been identified due to the excellent work of our Public Safety team. This is currently an open investigation. Upon completion of the investigative process, consistent with CUNY policies, applicable and appropriate actions will be taken.

At BMCC, we have a zero-tolerance policy towards hate and bigotry. Our unwavering commitment to creating a safe, welcoming, and supportive learning environment that fosters respect and inclusivity for everyone in our campus community remains steadfast.

We encourage our BMCC community to utilize campus support resources. Students who need support can stop by the Counseling Center in Room S-343 at 199 Chambers Street or call 212-220-8140. Corporate Counseling Associates, Inc. (CCA) will provide counseling, consultation resources, and support services to all full-time and part-time employees and their family members. To access CCA, please visit: www.myccaonline.com (Company code: CUNY) or call toll free: 1-800-833-8707.

At BMCC, we take our responsibility to maintaining a work and educational environment free from unlawful discrimination and harassment very seriously – and we encourage the reporting of complaints.  Any member of our community with a complaint of unlawful discrimination, unlawful harassment, or retaliation, can report it directly on the CUNY University-Wide Discrimination and Retaliation Reporting Portal.  This will generate a report to the Office of Compliance and Diversity. The Office of Compliance and Diversity can also be contacted with questions, concerns, or requests to file a complaint relating to unlawful discrimination, harassment, retaliation, and sexual misconduct: Chief Diversity Officer Odelia Levy at OLevy@bmcc.cuny.edu or the Deputy Director Theresa Wade at TWade@bmcc.cuny.edu.  For additional information, please visit the Office of Compliance and Diversity website.
