Status of Fiterman Hall

March 11, 2005

The architectural firm of Pei Cobb Freed & Partners was selected by the University to provide professional services for clean-up and demolition and design of a new building to replace the damaged Fiterman Hall. The architects and their team, which includes Tishman Construction Corporation and the LiRo Group, were approved by the CUNY Board of Trustees in November 2004. This renowned firm assembled a team of consultants, which brings all required professional expertise to the project, to ensure proper environmental clean-up of the existing severely damaged building, its demolition, and a design for a new facility at the same site. The design of the project is anticipated to begin in April 2005. The first step will be to perform a thorough environmental investigation and site surveys, and develop a program of Waste Characterization and Testing. A formal Waste Management Plan, as well as an Environmental Monitoring Plan, will be developed, supported by the results of all the previous environmental testing. The University and the Dormitory Authority of the State of New York will work with Community Board No. 1, all regulatory agencies, and local elected officials to ensure that the proposed environmental clean-up plan meets all applicable laws and regulations and will obtain all required approvals before any clean-up/construction activity begins by next winter.
