BMCC President Antonio Pérez and State University of New York (SUNY) Empire State College President Alan R. Davies met today at BMCC’s main campus to sign a Pathways Transfer Program agreement—enabling even more BMCC graduates to pursue a bachelor’s degree.
Through this agreement, students will be able to transfer credits from their BMCC Associate in Art, Associate in Science, or Associate in Applied Science degree toward a bachelor’s degree at SUNY Empire State College.
“It is our priority at BMCC not only to provide an affordable, quality education, but to encourage our students—associate degree in hand—to take that critical next step,” President Pérez said.
“Our partnership with Empire State College will enable graduates to make a seamless transfer into a wide range of bachelor’s degree programs that fit their career goals, as well as family commitments, by providing a mix of independent study, residencies and online courses. Those options are key to student success.”
A student-designed, online bachelor’s degree program
Empire State College, celebrating its 40th anniversary, is unique in that it provides students with the flexibility to study online and design their own course of study.
“The Pathways agreement removes barriers of time and place and makes it easier for BMCC graduates to live and work in their communities while earning a SUNY Empire State College bachelor’s degree,” said President Davis.
“Our partnership reflects the commitment of CUNY and SUNY to facilitate student transfer, and President Pérez and his team have done outstanding work in making today’s agreement possible.”
Through this agreement, BMCC graduates will be able to transfer credits from their associate degree into a bachelor’s degree program at Empire State College, and earn a SUNY degree through independent studies, seminars, residencies, and online courses.
They can choose from areas of study including the arts; business, management and economics; community and human services; educational studies; human development; interdisciplinary studies; science, math and technology, and more. The college also offers a Bachelor of Science in Nursing for registered nurses.
Credit for life experience
Students will even have the option to create a curriculum that not only meets Empire State College and SUNY requirements, but is tailored to meet their own educational goals and provides credit for college-level learning gained from work and life experience; such as military training, certification in certain fields, and artistic pursuits such as painting, sculpture or music.
SUNY Empire State College faculty mentors educate learners online and at sites including the college’s Metropolitan Center in Manhattan, and locations in Brooklyn and Staten Island.
