BMCC art professor Sarah Haviland exhibited her environmental sculpture on the grounds of the National Museum of Marine Science & Technology (NMMST) in Keelung, Taiwan, from May 14 to June 7, 2015.
Haviland was one of nine artists chosen from more than 200 applications from 56 countries, to be part of the 2015 International Environment Art Project curated by environmental artist Jane Ingram Allen.
The exhibit featured Ashish Ghosh, India; Firman Djamil, Indonesia;
Michael and Anna Rofka, Germany and Ukraine; Sarah Haviland, USA;
Sue Bamford, UK; Rudi Punzo, Italy; Yi-chun Lo, Taiwan; Kuei-chih (Chris) Lee, Taiwan and Hung-wei Lin, Taiwan.
The theme for the exhibit was Paradise: Sustainable Oceans, and the artists-in-residence arrived in Keelung, Taiwan on May 14 to create their outdoor environmental artworks with natural and recycled materials. The residencies ended June 8, but the exhibit will be ongoing for a year.
Professor Haviland’s piece, Black Kite Bench, “is in the form of an endangered local bird,” she says. “It welcomes people to look out on the beautiful vista you see here [from the grounds of the museum in Taiwan] and promotes ocean conservation.”
Now back on campus, Haviland says she has felt “strong support at BMCC for my research and creative work as a sculptor, and this international project is a perfect example. As we prepare students for a global future of creative problem solving, it’s important to embody our values and explore our passions.”
