Jeremiah Hyacinth, BMCC Alum and Champion for International Students

March 27, 2006

Jeremiah Hyacinth is a BMCC alumnus from St. Lucia. After finishing his Associates degree, he transferred to Columbia University for his Bachelor’s degree in political science with a focus on International Relations. Upon graduating in 2003, Hyacinth made the decision to put his graduate studies on hold so that he could help other international students by starting his own business, Uni-Recruitment.

“I bring the schools to my college fairs in the Caribbean region,” Hyacinth explains. “That’s where I help with recruitment.”

The BMCC Student Government President fall 2001-spring 2002, Hyacinth was also a reporter and editor for the student newspaper, Voice of the Voiceless. He took his experience of working at the publication to start the World Scholar, a quarterly magazine that focuses on International student life in the United States and England. The magazine is distributed all over the country and can be found online.

When Hyacinth decided to put his graduate studies on hold, he knew it was because he felt something was missing with his life, that there were things he needed to do before pursuing his education. Although he couldn’t articulate then what he needed to do, he can now.

“I’m hoping to help BMCC even further in their recruitment efforts,” says Hyacinth. “By my coming to school here I’ve been able to network and have access to the United Nations. I want to use my life story as a guide to show other international students how to circumvent obstacles.”

Hyacinth is now gearing up for next fall’s foreign student summit, which will be sponsored by the World Scholar.
