Faculty Art Show Opens

June 20, 2006

Michael Langenstein, assistant professor of Music and Art, recently exhibited a series of oil paintings at Salomon Arts gallery, 83 Leonard Street (June 9 to June 18). His work, entitled “Objects of Oneness,” took objects used as aids to meditation as its inspiration. Known as mandalas, these simple forms are nevertheless complex in their symbolic meaning.

“The Oneness Paintings symbolize the two spheres of the psyche,” Langenstein said. “The first sphere, or the focal point of the painting, is the three dimensional inner ring, which represents the conscious element of the psyche. The second sphere, the pi*, is the large outer ring which represents the unconscious element of the psyche. These two elements are united in the paintings. The white light emanating from the center of the paintings is produced by the unification of these two elements and represents a higher mental level and spiritual oneness.”

Painted in brilliant colors, the canvases in the series seem to glow with a mysterious, sensual aura that draws the viewer in to reveal the complexity beneath the seemingly uncomplicated shapes and brushstrokes.

As Langenstein said, “These paintings have a singleness of purpose which is growth and progress toward oneness with the spirit. The very presence of the paintings nurtures the primal spirit which loves stillness. “
