Building Relationships

September 7, 2006

When the finance firm Goldman Sachs hired Tishman Construction to build its new worldwide headquarters in downtown Manhattan, BMCC was invited into the mix. Situated at Site 26 on Vesey Street, right across the pedestrian plaza from the Regal Theater, the new building will be only blocks from the College. By choosing to stay in Manhattan and build their headquarters in New York City, Goldman Sachs will have a major impact on our city’s workforce and economy, creating thousands of new jobs.

In an effort to reach out to Goldman Sachs, the BMCC Foundation approached the firm’s Managing Director of Global Real Estate Strategies, Timur Galen, to co-chair BMCC’s Spring 2006 Gala. Mr. Galen was receptive to the idea under one condition: that the Goldman Sachs/BMCC relationship extend beyond that one event. They were looking for a Construction Management apprentice – and that’s where the partnership began.

Seventeen hopeful BMCC students applied for the 18-month Construction Management Apprenticeship. The lucky winner was announced at the College’s Annual Spring Gala.

Trung Truong: BMCC’s “APPRENTICE”

“I am so happy I applied and got the internship,” says Truong, the BMCC student who was selected after a grueling three-part interview process. “I had three days to meet the deadline when I heard about it. I wasn’t sure if it fit with what I want to do career-wise until Dean Craig told me more about the program. She got me really interested.”

Trung has been interning with Goldman Sachs and Tishman Construction since May 2006. He graduated from BMCC in June and is completing his Bachelor’s degree at Baruch College, where he is majoring in Real Estate Investment.

Trung is just as committed to finishing school as he is to the 18-month internship. As a part-time employee he’s earning a salary in the $30,000 range—pretty impressive stuff for someone still in college.

We look forward to hearing about Trung’s achievements in the future. With a B.A. in hand and Goldman Sachs/Tishman Construction work experience on his résumé, his future looks bright!
