BMCC Welcomes Gail H. Fernandez, Associate Dean of Faculty

Borough of Manhattan Community College (BMCC/CUNY) is pleased to welcome Dr. Gail H. Fernandez as Acting Associate Dean of Faculty, effective February 14, 2023.

Gail H. FernandezDr. Fernandez comes to BMCC from New Jersey City University (NJCU) where she was Associate Provost. She will serve on BMCC President Anthony E. Munroe’s cabinet and report to Provost and Senior Vice President Erwin Wong.

Among other responsibilities, Dr. Fernandez will oversee and support faculty development and enhance faculty research, scholarship and creative activity. She will also oversee recruitment and hiring efforts, as well as manage the reappointment, promotion and tenure process.

Expertise in mentorship, curriculum development, assessment and project management

Associate Dean Fernandez brings a wealth of expertise in mentorship, curriculum development program assessment and project management to BMCC. At NJCU, she collaborated closely with college deans, department chairs and faculty. Dr. Fernandez provided overall support to the division of Academic Affairs and the Administration including the implementation of a number of university programs and initiatives focused on excellence and student success.

Dr. Fernandez also established a Center for Teaching and Learning at NJCU serving as Director of the ACE Learner Success Lab which contributed to a culture of continuous improvement.

Before joining NJCU, Fernandez served as Assistant Dean of Academic Affairs at Westchester Community College where she oversaw the creation of articulation and transfer agreements, and maintained a program catalog that included yearly curriculum and policy updates. She was a project leader in converting program requirements into semester program maps and redesigned the student learning outcomes assessment model, a move that furthered data-informed decision-making at the college.  She also led committees to create Micro-Credential and Prior Learning Assessment policies.

Dr. Fernandez was Dean of Assessment at Bergen Community College where she oversaw both Academic and AES assessment and program review.  She created a Policy Advisory Council and assisted in college-wide strategic planning.  Dr. Fernandez also spent a number of years as a professor of ESL, first at New York University’s The American Language Institute as well as Bergen Community College in New Jersey where she taught and mentored students of diverse socioeconomic backgrounds, differing levels of academic preparation and varying abilities. Dr. Fernandez has expertise in four levels of ESL, grammar, reading and writing skills and has also collaborated on a student learning outcomes analysis that led to equitable intermediate ESL exit testing policies.
