On December 7, Borough of Manhattan Community College (BMCC/CUNY) President Anthony E. Munroe and University of Turin Rector Stefano Guena signed a Statement of Shared Interest with the University of Turin, a public research university with around 80,000 students in the city of Turin, located in the Piedmont region of Italy.

“We are here to memorialize our mutual intention to promote collaborative academic opportunities,” said President Munroe.  “We look forward to the exchange and development of opportunities for students and faculty of our respected institutions to collaborate and pursue education and research programs.”

CUNY Vice Chancellor for Student Affairs Denise B. Maybank participated in the ceremony and spoke about the importance of internationalizing student experiences and making certain New York City students experience the world beyond the five boroughs.

“We owe it to the amazing students who choose CUNY to help internationalize their experience and globalize their perspectives, that is what this is about,” said Vice Chancellor Denise B. Maybanks “It is about building relationships, so that we can find answers to the big issues of today.”

The University of Turin has a significant focus on healthcare and STEM which could lead to opportunities for BMCC students and faculty to participate in clinicals or conduct research in Italy.

The agreement will allow BMCC the opportunity to pursue study abroad for students, student exchange between the two institutions, faculty, as well as student and administrative opportunities both inside and outside of the classroom, according to Senior Vice President and Provost Erwin Wong

During his remarks, University of Turin Rector Guena said internationalization was one of his main goals.  He said he is committed to bringing the potential opportunities the signed statement memorializes to fruition.
