A December 2013 article in The Atlantic, “How to Escape the Community-College Trap,” opens with this assertion: “More than half of community-college students never earn a degree. Here’s how to fix that”—and then goes on to describe one BMCC student’s experience in the college’s ASAP program.

“Students,” author Ann Hulbert says, “especially the least prepared ones, don’t just need to learn math or science; they need to learn how to navigate academic and institutional challenges … and how to plot a course—daily, weekly, monthly—toward long-term success.” The ASAP program, she says, teaches them exactly that.
