BMCC Economics Day

March 20 at 2:00 pm - 4:00 pm
| Richard Harris Terrace (199 Chambers St., near cafeteria)

Join us on Economics Day and explore an education and career in economics.
Austerity is back with a vengeance, or one could argue, it has never left us. For more than a century, governments facing financial crises have resorted to the economic policies of austerity—cuts in social expenditure, interest rate hikes, privatizations and labor deregulation—as a path to solvency. The question remains: what if solvency was never austerity’s goal?

Clara E. Mattei is Associate Professor in the Economics Department of The New School for Social Research in New York City. Her research contributes to the history of capitalism, exploring the critical relation between economic ideas and technocratic policy making.

She will discuss her recently published book and offer insights on how to rethink austerity and the question of its persistence. A different conception of austerity is crucial in order to make sense of the predicaments of contemporary society.

Geert Dhondt is Associate Professor and Department Chair of Economics at John Jay College of Criminal Justice, City University of New York.  He is particularly interested in the relationship between race in the post-segregation era, the logic of neoliberal capitalism, and the criminal justice system.

Professor Dhondt will discuss his research on crime and justice and will talk about the Economics Program and Transfer Options for Economics Majors at John Jay College.

The Economics Equality and Environment Academic Club will be featured and there will be opportunity for questions and discussion.

All BMCC students who attend can earn Co-Curricular Transcript (CCT) credit.
