Office of Diplomatic Engagement and Training

The mission of the Office of Diplomatic Engagement and Training is to provide high quality capacity building and training to diplomats, consular officials and others throughout New York, surrounding areas and beyond. Utilizing the United Nations 17 Sustainable Development Goals as a framework for the college’s workforce capacity building efforts, it will provide an expanded range of educational services in alignment with both BMCC and CUNY system workforce goals and strategic plans. The Office will work for the benefit of students, faculty, staff and the broader international diplomatic community. There are more than 116 foreign consulates and 193 permanent missions in New York City, which hosts the largest diplomatic corps in the world.

Diplomats and consular staff play a crucial role in representing their countries’ interests abroad. This complex field requires specialized knowledge, skills and abilities. The Office aims to provide:

  • opportunities for teaching, learning and participating in diplomacy for faculty, staff and students
  • lectures and seminar presentations by dignitaries and distinguished national scholars
  • participation in global outreach events
  • faculty and student participation in international conferences
  • partnerships with governmental and non-governmental organizations and businesses

This work will enable individuals the opportunity to pursue careers in international relations, while at the same time provide current incumbent staff the necessary knowledge and skills to excel in their roles.
