BMCC AWARDS SCHOLARSHIPS TO CHINESE AMERICAN STUDENTS

Seven students receive New York City Hall Lions Club scholarships.

Borough of Manhattan Community College (BMCC) has awarded scholarships of $2,500 each per year to seven Chinese American students. The New York City Hall Lions Club Chinese American Scholarship is funded by money raised from that organization’s annual gala dinner and fashion show.

In announcing the recipients of the NYC Hall Lions Club Chinese American Scholarship, BMCC President Antonio PÉrez emphasized the importance of Chinatown and its residents to the college’s outreach efforts.

“Roughly ten percent of our student population is made up of individuals who consider themselves Asian or Pacific Islanders,” PÉrez says. “Through the New York City Hall Lions Club Scholarship and other initiatives, such as BMCC’s language immersion program in Chinatown, we hope to increase that number and bring more students of Asian descent into our institution.”

The recipients of the NYC Hall Lions Club Chinese American Scholarship are: Ji-Su He, 49; Cuihua Hu, 23; Chiu Sze Lau, 23; Chon Loi Mui, 36; Ka Fai Tse, 18; Xue Shan Wang, 18; Fan-Yeung, 29.

The NYC Hall Lions Club’s Seventeenth Anniversary Gala Dinner and Fashion Show will take place at Jing Fong Restaurant in Chinatown on September 24. Proceeds will benefit the Chinese American scholarship fund at BMCC.
