Faculty Artists Showcase Work and Remember Artist Charles McGill

“Apples, Peppers and Lemons” by BMCC Professor and artist John Goodrich
February 6, 2018

In the Studio, an exhibition of recent faculty art, opens at Borough of Manhattan Community College (BMCC/CUNY) on Wednesday, February 14, from 5 to 8 p.m. in BMCC’s Shirley Fiterman Art Center, 81 Barclay Street in lower Manhattan.

The exhibition offers a look at BMCC’s dynamic, diverse faculty of artists and designers. The breadth and depth of creativity on display will showcase expertise in traditional art media techniques in painting and sculpture, as well as in video art, installation works and pieces made with advanced computer technology.

In the Studio will also pay tribute to BMCC Professor Charles McGill (1964-2017). A memorial event in honor of Professor McGill will be held at 6:30 p.m. during the opening.

Fortress for Four by Charles McGill

“Though he taught at BMCC only three years, during that relatively short period Charles McGill made an enormous impact on both his students and his colleagues,” says Professor of Art Peter (Xico) Greenwald, who serves on the faculty Gallery Committee that coordinated In the Studio. “Charles was charismatic and kind-hearted. He was a remarkable drawing instructor; charcoal drawings from his classes conveyed a firm grasp of tone, proportion and line.”

Trained as a figurative artist, McGill was best known for his abstracted, politically charged assemblages created with repurposed golf bags, and his work was featured in a number of exhibitions at the Shirley Fiterman Art Center during his tenure at BMCC.
