Lisa Nicchi is from Phoenix, Arizona, having grown up in the warmth and expanse of the desert. After studying and living in Los Angeles, she moved to New York to further her studies in art. Lisa earned her MFA at New York Academy of Art, focusing on Painting and Printmaking. She currently lives and works in Brooklyn.

Through the process or drawing, monotype, and movement, Lisa discovered her love of the quickness of creativity and level of intuition it provides. With inspiration from dancing, movement, and music, Lisa goes at the canvas with an oil stick and the intuitive turns of the arm and wrist to create an initial mark. She stands back to see what emerges, with aim to depict that on the canvas as the image progresses. Figures rise from an initial gesture line, wrapping around unplanned waves that become curves of bodies. Scenes, meanings, and themes are derived from these threads as the painting develops.

These paintings are a nod to surrealist techniques and her own subconscious feelings. Lisa’s works explore themes of intimacy, movement, the bizarre, humor, and sexuality, revealing themselves to be discovered.
