Remembering Joshua L. Smith, BMCC Past President (1977-1985)

President Anthony E. Munroe invites all BMCC faculty, staff and students to join in remembering Joshua L. Smith, BMCC Past President from 1977 to 1985.

Dr. Joshua L. Smith served as BMCC’s fourth president (1977-85) and oversaw the construction of the campus in lower Manhattan. Dr. Smith has been cited by Black Issues in Higher Education as one of the most influential figures in higher education in the 20th century. Upon leaving BMCC, he served as Chancellor of the Community Colleges of California, overseeing 107 colleges and 1.2 million students. Before joining the New York University faculty as Emeritus Professor of Higher Education at the School of Education, Dr. Smith taught at City and Baruch Colleges. He was a founding member of the Board of Trustees of Regents College, which is now Excelsior College. Dr. Smith served in the United States Air Force as a pilot in the Strategic Air Command. He received a bachelor’s degree in history from Boston University and a master’s and doctoral degree from Harvard University.
