Joe Doctor Colloquium: Trauma-Informed Principles to Support College Students in Distress

May 3 at 10:00 am - 12:00 pm
| Zoom

The Faculty Development Committee invites BMCC faculty and staff to join us for the 2024 Joe Doctor Colloquium: Trauma-Informed Principles to Support College Students in Distress.

The event will be held virtually on Friday, May 3 at 10 am.  Our guest speaker will be Janice Carello, PhD, LMSW.

Topic
What do we do when students stop coming to class? How do we respond when students share stories of personal struggles? How do we give failing grades without feeling like we are failing in our role as educators? This workshop will provide an introduction to trauma-informed approaches in higher education: what it means to become trauma-informed, why it’s important for college educators, and what it looks like in practice. Participants will also explore strategies for recognizing and responding to distress using a trauma-informed lens. We will learn about communication skills and resources for responding to individual students as well as classroom policy and practices that help foster environments that are conducive to learning and growth. Participants will also be provided with resources to aid further exploration and professional development.

Register now for the colloquium and you will receive a Zoom link for the event.
