Hip Hop Film Festival: Rubble Kings

March 13 at 2:00 pm - 4:00 pm
| 199 Chambers St., Room N-451

The Department of Ethnic and Race Studies invites you to join us for the kick-off of our Hip Hop Film Festival. From March 13 through May 8, we will be presenting a series of Hip Hop films on Wednesdays, from 2-4 p.m. We hope you will join us!

“Rubble Kings” is a captivating documentary that explores the origins and impacts of gang culture in New York City during the 1970s. The film takes us back to a time when the city was facing social and economic turmoil, with crime rates soaring and neighborhoods torn apart by violence.

Through interviews, archival footage, and personal stories, “Rubble Kings” focuses on the transformation of gang culture into a movement for peace and community empowerment. It sheds light on the revolutionary efforts of gang members who, tired of the cycle of violence, decided to unite and create the “Rubble Kings,” a group dedicated to resolving disputes nonviolently.

The documentary showcases how this movement gave birth to a vibrant street culture that nurtured the emerging hip-hop movement, with figures like Afrika Bambaataa and KRS-One becoming influential voices for peace and artistic expression.

“Rubble Kings” offers a thought-provoking and inspiring look at how individuals were able to turn the tide of violence and shape a positive future. It provides a deep understanding of the cultural and social dynamics of the time, making it both an engaging and enlightening film.
