Library Instruction

Program Mission

The Library Instruction Program supports BMCC’s mission to empower students by offering content that enhance classroom curriculum and foster confidence in independent research and learning.

Information for Faculty

BMCC Library provides both in-person information literacy sessions and asynchronous information resources for faculty to embed in their Brightspace course shells.  Asynchronous content can be found on the Open Lab. In-person information Literacy sessions are designed to help with specific research assignments. Introductions to library services are available via our asynchronous content.  We also provide stand-alone virtual research workshops by major.

In-person information literacy sessions will be offered by library faculty Monday through Friday from 9am to 7pm (classes must start no later than 6pm and end by 7pm). To request in-person information literacy sessions faculty must:

  1. Request an information literacy session 30 days prior to the date you are requesting. All requests must be submitted via the information literacy request form
  2. Provide a description of the class assignment or project that the library faculty member will focus the information literacy session around.
  3. Faculty must attend the session with their class.  If that is not possible, please send a substitute or cancel the session.

Due to the shortage of library faculty, the department cannot guarantee that each request will be honored. Faculty will be notified no later than two weeks before the scheduled session if their request cannot be honored. If this happens faculty will be referred to the Open Lab site for appropriate asynchronous resources. Faculty can make an appointment with a library faculty member if they need assistance embedding and using the toolkits found on the Open Lab site.

The library department strongly recommends that faculty members embed the five modules found in the General Research Skills Toolkit on the Open Lab site in all of their courses. These modules will provide students with an overview of the library website as well as access to basic academic research resources.

The library department looks forward to partnering with faculty to provide the students at BMCC with the best education possible. If you have any questions about the program, please email libraryinstruction@bmcc.cuny.edu.
