BMCC Foundation Gala Raises More Than $1.12 Million for Student Scholarships
BMCC and the BMCC Foundation hosted a 2017 Gala, “Invest in a Future,” on May 18 at Cipriani, 25 Broadway, raising more than $1.12 million to benefit the BMCC Scholarship Fund. The evening's Honorees were Carol Britton, Chief Operating Officer for Corporate Services at BNY Mellon, and Jeffrey Gural, Chairman of Newmark Knight Frank. Special Guest Star Honorees were Oscar®- and Grammy®-winning songwriters Kristen Anderson-Lopez and Robert Lopez.

Commencement

BMCC Hosts 52nd Commencement June 2
BMCC will confer associate degrees during morning and afternoon Commencement ceremonies at The Theater at Madison Square Garden, 4 Pennsylvania Plaza in Manhattan, on June 2. BMCC President Antonio Pérez will present the 2017 BMCC President’s Medal to U.S. Congressman Adriano Espaillat in the morning, and to film producer and co-founder of the Tribeca Film Festival, Jane Rosenthal, in the afternoon. The morning Commencement Valedictorian is Computer Science major Olasubomi Ayomide Efuniyi and the afternoon Commencement Valedictorian is Psychology major Paulina Malinowska.

Faculty Share Positive Experiences With Melissa Riggio Students  
The BMCC Office of Student Affairs, Office of Accessibility and Office of Academic Affairs — in collaboration with AHRC New York City — hosted the Second Annual Melissa Riggio Faculty Year-End Celebration on May 24 at the BMCC campus. Coordinated by Nicole Leach, Assistant Director in the BMCC Office of Accessibility, the Melissa Riggio Program at BMCC brings faculty together with Melissa Riggio students who audit their classes with the assistance of a CUNY student mentor.

Thirteen BMCC Students Earn Scholarships to Study Abroad in Summer 2017
Thirteen BMCC students received a total of $34,000 in scholarships to fund their Study Abroad trips in Summer 2017, according to Deborah Stengle, Academic Study Abroad Program Manager at BMCC. In addition, she says, funding was made available for the first time from the CUNY Chancellor's Global Scholarship program and the BMCC Urban Male Leadership Academy (UMLA).

BMCC Leading the Way in CUNY OER Effort
BMCC faculty have been working with the college’s library and Center for Excellence in Teaching, Learning and Scholarship (CETLS) to convert expensive textbooks into Open Educational Resources (OER). The effort at BMCC is the largest and most consistent throughout the CUNY system, according to CUNY Open Education Librarian Ann Fiddler.

2017 Honors Convocation Recognizes Student Excellence 
The BMCC Honors Convocation will be held Tuesday, May 30 at 6 p.m. in Theatre II at 199 Chambers Street. More than 50 students from a wide range of academic departments and those who have garnered special awards will be recognized.

BMCC Faculty Join CUNY Chancellor’s Research Fellowship Program
The Chancellor’s Research Fellowship Program aims to advance the research, scholarship and creative work of CUNY’s outstanding community college faculty. The program supports a broad range of faculty projects in the humanities, social and natural sciences and creative and performing arts. Text/ure Exhibition Opens at Shirley Fiterman Art Center, May 30
The art exhibition “Text/ure” will open in the Shirley Fiterman Art Center (SFAC) at 81 Barclay Street, with a reception on Tuesday, May 30 from 6 to 9 p.m. Curated by Kristen Frederickson with assistant curator Avery Curran, the exhibit will feature the work of 13 artists and celebrate texture and material, Frederickson says. The SFAC is open to the public from 12 to 6 p.m., Tuesday through Saturday at (212) 776-6237.

BMCC Selected to Participate in AAC&U Summer Institute
Representatives from BMCC will participate in the Institute on High-Impact Practices and Student Success of the Association of American Colleges & Universities (AAC&U), June 24 –27 at Boston University. “The individuals and teams selected to participate in AAC&U’s 2017 summer institutes demonstrate their commitment to developing and exchanging best practices in support of student success, which is more important than ever,” said AAC&U President Lynn Pasquerella.

Pinning BMCC Nursing Graduates Recognized in Pinning Ceremony, May 31
The BMCC community is invited to cheer on graduates of the BMCC Nursing Department as they cross the stage in Theatre 1 at 199 Chambers Street on Wednesday, May 31 at 11 a.m. The Pinning Ceremony honors students who have completed the rigorous Nursing program and completed clinical rotations at hospitals throughout New York City. Graduates earn an A.A.S. in Nursing, and are eligible to take the National Council Licensure Examination for Registered Nurses (RNs).

BMCC Select Chorus Celebrates Dvořák in Free Public Concert, June 1
The BMCC Select Chorus will perform June 1 at 7 p.m., at the Bohemian National Hall, Czech Center, 321 E. 73rd Street, NYC. This FREE event, presented through the Dvořák American Heritage Association, is part of the New York Philharmonic’s New World Initiative, a citywide project revolving around Dvořák’s Symphony No. 9, From the New World, and its theme of “home.”

Civil Service Employee Recognition Day, RSVP by June 2
The BMCC community is invited to attend a special luncheon on Tuesday June 20 in Richard Harris Terrace honoring Civil Service Classified Staff for years served at the College. David Killen, Donald Peterson, Celeste Holman, Jerome Hartzog and James Jones will be honored for 20 years service. Sonia Barco, Robert Philip, Carlos Rodas, Lilian Cardenas and Werner Quijano will be the 25-year honorees. Marveli Hilton will be the 30-year honoree and 35-year honorees will be Hector Pacheco, Wendell Readous and Rosa Hughley. BMCC Community Invited to AES Assessment Day, June 5
The Office of Institutional Effectiveness and the AES Assessment Committee are hosting AES Assessment Day on Monday, June 5 from 9:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. in Fiterman Room 1306-1307. Presenters from throughout BMCC will share their assessment methods and findings, and participants are encouraged to bring a copy of their unit's Mission, Goals and Outcomes. Please RSVP here.

Summer Fridays Start June 30
BMCC’s four-day summer workweek will be in effect Monday, June 26 through Friday, August 11. The College will be closed these Fridays: June 30, July 14, July 21, July 28, August 4 and August 11. The Independence Day holiday will be observed Tuesday, July 4, and during that week, all employees will work seven-hour days on Monday, Wednesday, Thursday and Friday.
