Four Students Graduate from Melissa Riggio Program at BMCC
The BMCC Office of Student Affairs, Office of Accessibility and Office of Academic Affairs, in collaboration with AHRC New York City, hosted the Third Annual Melissa Riggio Year-End Celebration on May 23 at the BMCC campus. The Melissa Riggio Higher Education Program engages young adults with disabilities in academic and social experiences. Chrystal Couchman (Liberal Arts, '16), a mentor with the program said, "Today's event inspired the four students who graduated from the Melissa Riggio Program and it inspired me, as well. I felt touched and proud as the students thanked BMCC, their professors and mentors." The audience was in tears, she said, as parents shared that they had always been told their child would never attend college, because of his or her disability—but the program had proved that not to be true. In fact, one Melissa Riggio student became a matriculating student at BMCC, and is on track to graduate at the end of Summer 2018.
