Poster Contest

BMCC Student Places Third in NYPD Poster Contest
BMCC student Nadine Mamane, a liberal arts major, won third place in the NYPD Campus Sexual Assault Poster Contest. Mamane was recognized on Nov. 9 during an awards ceremony featuring NYC Police Commissioner William J. Bratton. Mamane, who will be graduating in May 2016, plans to transfer to the Fashion Institute of Technology to pursue her degree in graphic design. Her mentor, Professor Jessica Ramirez, was also recognized for working with Mamane in the development of the poster.

Professor Yanagisawa Earns Breakthrough Prize for Research
BMCC Science Professor Chiaki Yanagisawa is being recognized as a member of three research teams led by Fundamental Physics Breakthrough Prize Laureates, announced November 2015: Koichiro Nishikawa and the K2K and T2K Collaboration; Yoichiro Suzuki and the Super K Collaboration and Takaaki Kajita and the Super K Collaboration. All three teams are part of the discovery and exploration of neutrino oscillations, dramatically changing the standard model of particle physics. The Breakthrough Prizes in Life Sciences, Fundamental Physics and Mathematics were founded in 2012 by Sergey Brin (a co-founder of Google) and Anne Wojcicki; Mark Zuckerberg (a co-founder of Facebook) and Priscilla Chan; Yuri Milner and Julia Milner, and Jack Ma and Cathy Zhang.

Professor Salam Selected for ASA Task Force
Associate Professor and Deputy Chair of Sociology Rifat A. Salam is one of two community college professors on the 20-member Task Force on Liberal Learning, within the American Sociological Association (ASA). BMCC’s new Associate of Art in Sociology program, within the Social Science, Human Services and Criminal Justice department, links to the B.A. in Sociology program at Brooklyn College, CUNY and was launched in Fall 2015.

President’s Circle

BMCC Launches President’s Circle of Educational Excellence
On Nov. 11 (Veteran’s Day) the BMCC Foundation hosted an event to launch the President’s Circle to recognize individuals who have donated $1,000 or more to the College. Remarks were presented by President Antonio Perez, Provost Karrin Wilks, Dean Michael Hutmaker and Coordinator for the Veterans Student Center Wilfred Cotto. In addition, BMCC Student Angela Williams, a veteran of the U.S. Army, sang The National Anthem.

Herbert Rosenfield: On the Frontlines of Community Service and Higher Education
Borough Manhattan Community College (BMCC/CUNY) is proud to recognize individuals who have made significant contributions to our programs and scholarship funds. Herbert Rosenfield is a long-time friend of BMCC and founding member of the BMCC Foundation Board of Directors on which he served for more than 30 years. President Antonio Perez presented Herbert Rosenfied with an award with deep appreciation for his leadership in the establishment of the BMCC Foundation and for his generosity in creating The Abner B. Rosenfield Fund for Outstanding Scholarship and Citizenship 2015.

Announcements

BMCC Partners with DO School to Encourage Student Entrepreneurship
BMCC, in partnership with Innovate NYC, a program of The DO School, is offering students a chance to build entrepreneurial skills while they develop an innovative product or service. A core group of 20 students will be selected from eight participating colleges and universities, including BMCC. Participants will attend monthly workshops in January, February, March and April, as well as full-time daily workshops across three weeks, June 6 – 24 (limited stipends are available for the summer session). The online application deadline is November 22. The first 150 applicants will be eligible to attend a daylong, skill-building DO-a-thon, free of charge. BMCC Students Receive Training

BMCC Students Receive Training to Report Child Abuse and Maltreatment
On Nov. 4 Steve Forrester from the New York Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Children provided a two-hour training on the reporting of child abuse and maltreatment to BMCC students. At the end of the training, the students received official certificates certifying their attendance to this workshop and their knowledge about the signs of child abuse and neglect. The event was presented as part of the activities scheduled through the Social Services Club. BMCC Alumna Jacob E. Serra published the article, “3 Ways to Honor a Veteran.” Serra completed a four-year enlistment in the United States Marine Corps as an Intelligence Team Leader/Scout Sniper Platoon, Sergeant.
