2016 Gala

BMCC Foundation 2016 Gala Raises More Than $1.17 Million for Scholarship Fund
The BMCC Foundation 2016 Gala, “Invest in a Future,” held at Cipriani, raised $1,174,468 to benefit the BMCC Scholarship Fund. This year’s Honorees were Don Callahan, Head of Operations & Technology, Citi, and Garrett Moran, President, Year Up. Cindy Hsu, Emmy award-winning CBS 2 News anchor was MC for the evening. Special Guest Star Honoree was Edie Falco; Four-Time Emmy Award Winner, Golden Globe Award Winner and Tony Award-Nominated Actress and Philanthropist. Film and television producer Paula Weinstein introduced Ms. Falco, who said she was inspired by BMCC scholars who spoke at the event, and by the generous support in the room for BMCC and its students. "Events like this help balance out the bad news in the world," she said.

51st Commencement

BMCC Hosts 51st Commencement at Madison Square Garden with Largest Graduating Class in the College's History, June 3
On Friday, June 3, BMCC celebrated its 51st commencement with a morning and afternoon ceremony in The Theatre at Madison Square Garden. The valedictorians were Business Administration major Alex Guarino in the morning, and Liberal Arts major Teri Talbot in the afternoon. BMCC President Antonio Pérez presented the 2016 BMCC President’s Medal to Lloyd Blankfein, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of The Goldman Sachs Group, Inc. during the morning ceremony and the award was accepted by Dina Powell. He presented the President’s Medal to American Express. Richard Brown, Vice President of Philanthropy, American Express Company accepted the medal on the company’s behalf.

Civil Service

BMCC Honors Civil Service and Classified Staff
BMCC hosted its annual Civil Service and Classified Staff Employee Recognition Day in Richard Harris Terrace on June 8. BMCC President Antonio Pérez greeted the audience, and Vice President Robert Diaz delivered opening remarks. The awards were presented by BMCC Senior Vice President and Provost Karrin E. Wilks, MEOC Executive Director Anthony Watson, and BMCC Vice Presidents G. Scott Anderson and Joe Spadaro. The Academic Affairs Honorees were Janice Krigger, 45 years of service; Deborah Lane and Jenny Gonzalez, 35 years of service, and Ana Daniels, 25 years of service. The MEOC Honorees were Carmen Waldron, 30 years of service, and Juan Rufino, 25 years of service. The Administration and Planning Honorees were Luther Lee, 30 years of service, and Soy Ting-zwerin, 20 years of service. The Technology Honoree was Terrence Dunne, 20 years of service.

Vassar College

BMCC Has Largest Cohort Nationwide, of Exploring Transfer at Vassar College
Eight BMCC students have been chosen to participate in the five-week Summer 2016 Exploring Transfer program at Vassar College. BMCC has the largest cohort among the 15 community colleges participating in the program nationwide, according to Pauline Saavedra, Assistant Dean of Studies, Vassar. The BMCC cohort includes Science major Drew Ballard; Criminal Justice majors Byeonghyeon So, Samantha Jean and Laquan Bates; Communication Studies major Carolina Dellepiane; Human Services majors Joanne Torres and Eunice Melendez, and Business Administration major Adam Marr.

MEOC Graduation

MEOC Hosts Graduation for More Than 600 Students
The Manhattan Educational Opportunity Center (MEOC) held its 49th commencement ceremony on Wednesday, June 1 in BMCC’s Theatre 1. More than 600 graduates were honored for completing MEOC programs including English for Speakers of Other Languages, High School Equivalency, College Prep, Certified Nursing Assistant, Certified Microsoft® Office, Electronic Health Records, Civil Service Exam Prep and Security Officer Training. Leroy Jemison, MEOC Lecturer, presented graduate Jacqueline Gray with the Valedictorian Award. Ronald Pettaway, MEOC Coordinator of Admissions and Recruitment, introduced Keynote Speaker Clayton Banks, founder of Silicon Harlem.

Accounting

Accounting Department Holds Award Ceremony
Borough of Manhattan Community College (BMCC/CUNY), recognized the outstanding academic performance of 40 graduating students at an award ceremony hosted by BMCC's Accounting Department on May 31. Each of the students graduated BMCC with at least a 3.75 GPA in their accounting coursework.

Waivers

Summer Tuition Waivers: Priority Given to Students who Register by July 8 for Summer Session II
BMCC will offer Summer 2016 tuition waivers for courses counting toward degree completion to eligible, matriculating BMCC students who are New York State residents (U.S. citizen or permanent resident). Each eligible student may use no more than one tuition waiver in the summer session starting July 19. Learn more.

BMCC Joins CUNY to Bring Awareness to Community Needs
At BMCC, our understanding of diversity continues to expand. In response to the awareness and needs of our transgender community members, BMCC is posting signs in all single-sex facilities, including restroom and locker rooms stating: “Under the law, all individuals have the right to use the single-sex facility consistent with their gender identity or expression.” In addition, BMCC is posting signs outside single-occupancy restrooms that state: “This restroom may be used by persons of all genders.” For more information, visit www.cuny.edu.
