Civic Leadership Group

Civic Leadership Group Explores City Government  
Students in the BMCC Civic Leadership program (L-R above: Kelly Otterness, Niels Hansen, Awa Sanno, Sultana Yesmin, Allen Kruzhkov, Odaine Chambers, Maria Espinosa Rojas and Radha Longo) toured CIty Hall in lower Manhattan on March 15 and met with Councilmember Inez Barron, Chair of the Higher Education Committee, as well as the committee's policy staff. "The purpose of the trip was for students to get an insider perspective on the workings of city government and the role of the City Council,” said Doug Israel, BMCC Director of Government and Community Relations, who accompanied the students with Kayla Maryles, Assistant Director of Student Activities and Civic Involvement. "Councilmember Barron shared her background and talked about her work as Chair of the Higher Education Committee,” he said. "The policy staff shared information about their role in the Council and their education and career paths.”

Women’s Herstory Month BMCC Women’s Herstory Month Events Throughout March 
BMCC is celebrating Women’s Herstory Month throughout March with the theme, Nevertheless, She Persisted. Current activism in the United States and on many college campuses is reflected in the month's events.

AHM Asian Heritage Month: Submit Art and Poetry by March 28
In celebration of Asian Heritage Month, BMCC students, faculty and staff are invited to submit original art and poetry—you may submit in one or both categories—reflecting this year's theme, Harmony. ART: Please submit a jpeg or PDF of one or two original artworks, including a description of the work's physical dimensions and its medium or media. POETRY: Please submit three to five pages of original poetry. BOTH: Please include a 75- to 100-word summary of how your work relates to the concept of “harmony.” An event celebrating the selected art and poetry is set for April 19 at 199 Chambers Street, Room S-341, from 12 to 2:30 p.m. If you have questions, contact Professor Tim Keane at tkeane@bmcc.cuny.edu. Women’s Resource Center 25th Anniversary Celebration March 29
BMCC students, staff, faculty and alumni are invited to the 25th Anniversary Celebration of the BMCC Women’s Resource Center on March 29, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. at 199 Chambers Street, Room S-341. The day-long event includes laughing yoga, henna painting, crafting, dancing and more.

CUNY-Wide Conference on Diversity and Inclusion March 29
BMCC administration, faculty, staff and students are invited to attend the 2018 Research Conference on Diversity and Inclusion at the CUNY Graduate Center March 29. The conference is free but registration is required. For more information, visit the conference website.

Professional Development Fair: Develop Your Super Powers: April 4  
All BMCC staff members are invited to learn how to develop their own talent and opportunities at the college's first Professional Development Fair. Participants can attend workshops, visit table presentations and talk with representatives from colleges and universities, CUNY professional development resources, City of New York representatives and others.

Single Stop Single Stop Offers Services to Students to Combat Food Insecurity and More  
Working with other BMCC programs as well as with external partners, the BMCC Single Stop Office provides services to help students address barriers that prevent them from attending and completing school. All services are free and include SNAP Food Stamps, Health Insurance, Legal Services, Financial Counseling and Tax Preparation. For more information please call (212) 220-8195.

Degreeworks, the College’s online academic advisement and degree auditing system, enables advisors and students to view student academic progress. Public Safety Office of Public Safety Offers Resources and Services
The Office of Public Safety provides services and resources to ensure a safe, secure and comfortable learning environment at BMCC. Public Safety provides free C.P.R., A.E.D. and First Aid and Campus-Community Emergency Response Training for faculty, staff and students. Staff are also trained as fire wardens for various campus locations. Watch the video, Run. Hide. Fight.® to learn about surviving an active shooter event.
