BMCC Celebrates Tenured Professors
On Monday, October 5, President Antonio Perez, Provost Karrin E. Wilks, and the BMCC community recognized the college’s newly tenured faculty with a reception in the Shirley Fiterman Art Center in Fiterman Hall. The BMCC faculty are not only leaders in their fields, they are mentors, researchers and scholars. Obeng Kwaku Buo

Student Wins First Place at LSAMP Conference
BMCC science major Obeng Kwaku Buo won First Place in the Civil, Mechanical, Environmental or Aerospace Engineering category for his research poster presentation at the Louis Stokes Alliance for Minority Participation Program (LSAMP) 2015 Fall Symposium & Research Conference held at the University of Georgia, October 8-10, 2015.

Buo’s research project, "The Dynamics of Water Storage Over Lake Eyre, Australia, Observed by Satellite Data," is led by BMCC science professor Kibrewossen Tesfagiorgis and made possible by LSAMP’s Research Experience for Undergraduates program funded by the National Science Foundation. The project is also made possible by the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA), which provides rainfall data from Tropical Rainfall Measuring Mission Satellites. Under Professor Tesfagiorgiski’s guidance, Obeng Kwaku Buo analyzed data related to Lake Eyre, in order to gain a better understanding of the world’s water resources.

BMCC Stands with UCC

BMCC Stands with UCC Fundraiser: Oct. 15
Borough of Manhattan Community College is raising money to support the victims of the recent shooting at Umpqua Community College in Roseburg Oregon. Students will be collecting funds in the lobby of 199 Chambers Street Building from 10:00 a.m.to 4:00 p.m. For more information, contact the Office of Student Activities at osa@bmcc.cuny.edu or (212) 220-8160.

BMCC Hosts “Walk With Me” Program: Oct. 19
Faculty and staff are invited to attend BMCC’s 11th Annual "Walk With Me" program on October 19, at 12 noon in the Richard Harris Terrace. The BMCC family will be walking in the 199 Chambers Street building to let victims know that they are not alone and have a right to be safe. Faculty, staff and students should gather in Richard Harris Terrace and follow a silent procession through the BMCC campus. Participants may carry signs or banners that deliver the message: “Stop the violence."

2015 Faculty Development Day: Nov. 11
BMCC Faculty are invited to attend the 2015 Faculty Development Day workshop, “Maintaining Academic Momentum,” featuring Paul Attewell, Distinguished University Professor of Sociology and Urban Education at the CUNY Graduate Center, and Donna Linderman, University Associate Dean for Student Success Initiatives and Executive Director for CUNY ASAP. The workshop is scheduled from 11:30 a.m. to 2:00 p.m., Nov. 11 in rooms 1306 and 1307 at Fiterman Hall. Lunch will be served. RSVP by Oct.24 to Sharon Avni at savni@bmcc.cuny.edu

Volunteer Fair: Oct 27
BMCC’s Office of Student Affairs is hosting a Volunteer Fair from 11:00 a.m. - 4 p.m., Oct. 27 in the Richard Harris Terrace. The volunteer fair is an opportunity for students, faculty and staff to learn about volunteer opportunities available with a variety of companies and organizations that include: 9/11 Memorial Museum, Brooklyn Community Services, CHDFS, Inc., CUNY Service Corps, Free Arts NYC, Gallop NYC, Gilda's Club NYC, Harlem Educational Activities Fund, International Rescue Committee, Jersey City VISTA Program, Lower East Side Ecology Center, E Waste Warehouse, Make The Road New York, MECA/BMCC, Mentoring USA, New York Cares, New York City Coalition Against Hunger, New York City Relief, NYC Service - Office of the Mayor, Office of Student Activities, Pajama Jam Program, Parks Department: Green Thumb, Power Play NYC, South Bronx United, The Boys Club of New York, and The Police Athletic League.
